THE USEFUL IDEA

Report each metric with its source, unit, time window and coverage. Use unknown for unavailable measurements, and calculate rates only when numerator and denominator describe the same population.

Separate four layers of evidence

A reporting model for a small publisher
LayerQuestion it answersLimit to retain
Manual observationsDid this page appear for this recorded question and interface?A selected observation set is not all user demand.
Provider citation reportingWhat citation activity does this provider report within its coverage?Coverage, definitions and aggregation belong to that provider.
Site visitsWhat sessions did the available site measurement record?Missing referral or tracking data is not proof of no visit.
Reader outcomesWhat useful action was recorded under a defined measurement? An action alone does not establish why it happened.

For each row, keep a source export or a dated observation. Do not silently substitute a number from one layer when another is unavailable. This guide is a reporting method and a blank template; it does not present measured Jincheng traffic, citations or conversions.

Our AI-search visibility audit helps define the initial questions and evidence. The report should then say which of those questions the available data can answer.

Read provider metrics within their documented scope

Bing introduced AI Performance in Webmaster Tools as a public preview in February 2026. Its announcement describes citation visibility across Microsoft Copilot, Bing AI summaries and selected partner integrations. That is a defined Microsoft reporting scope, not a census of every AI answer system. Read the original announcement and metric definitions.

In that documentation, total citations counts appearances within the selected reporting period; it does not describe position in an answer. Average cited pages is an average of unique cited pages per day, rather than a ranking or authority score. Grounding-query phrases are a sample. Keep those definitions beside any exported numbers and check whether the interface has changed before interpreting a new report.

Google says traffic from its AI search features is included in Search Console’s Web search reporting. That does not turn a Web total into an isolated, cross-provider AI-citation count. Preserve the report label instead of renaming its total “all AI traffic.” See Google’s AI-feature measurement guidance.

Document what the visit measurement actually sees

If an analytics implementation is available, inspect the relevant acquisition fields and their scope. In GA4’s Traffic acquisition report, session source and session medium describe acquisition at session scope. They are not interchangeable with a user’s first acquisition source. Check the Traffic acquisition documentation.

Keep the original source/medium values, report filters, date range and timezone. If you create a group for known answer-service referrers, save its inclusion rules and review ambiguous hosts. Do not classify every unknown or direct session as AI. A missing referrer can have multiple causes, and a product name in a report requires context.

This article does not install analytics or presume an account has been configured. If session measurement is unavailable, write “unknown — measurement not configured” in the template. Zero should mean a measured zero within a stated scope, not an empty account or an unperformed check.

A worked example with deliberately incompatible counts

All numbers in this example are fictional. Imagine a weekly review with five manually chosen questions, three observations that cite the site, a provider report showing 40 citations, and site measurement recording 12 sessions in a defined referral group.

Fictional inputs: keep their units separate
InputValid statementUnsupported shortcut
3 citing observations out of 5 selected questions3 of these 5 observations contained a citation.60% of all relevant searches cite the site.
40 provider-reported citationsThe selected provider report returned 40 citations for this period.40 unique people saw the page.
12 measured referral sessions12 sessions matched the saved referral-group definition.12 of those 40 citations converted into visits.

Do not add these values into 55 “AI interactions.” Do not report 12 divided by 40 as a click-through rate: the sessions and citations have not been shown to describe the same events, interfaces or population. Even matching dates would not establish a link between them.

A useful comparison is narrower: repeat each metric with the same definition and window, note coverage changes, then investigate a change in context. If you measure an on-site action rate, define the eligible session set and the action explicitly. Do not extend that rate to unobserved citations.

Keep language and URL identity visible

Record the cited or visited URL as observed, then add the intended canonical and language in separate fields. A historical redirect, tracking parameter and Chinese edition should not disappear into a single unlabeled page count. Decide how to group them, and keep that rule consistent across periods.

The English/Chinese hreflang example shows the language map used on this site. That map can organize a report, but it cannot tell you the audience’s location or prove that one edition caused another to be cited.

For a manual observation, save the exact question, language, date, interface and cited URL. Record relevant conditions such as whether the session was signed in, without collecting private account details. Missing citations remain observations under those conditions, not proof that a provider has never retrieved the page.

Download a blank report and choose one next action

Download the English CSV template

The template has separate rows for the four evidence layers, with fields for source, metric, unit, period, timezone, filters, URL, language, value, coverage, evidence and next action. Initial values are “unknown”; no account data is included. Open a copy in your spreadsheet and fill the definitions before adding counts. For sensitive exports, retain only information needed for the editorial decision.

End the review with an evidence-based action: inspect a cited URL, improve a missing explanation, verify a translation or repair an inaccessible page. Use the Content Brief Builder to record the question, supporting material and unresolved assumptions.

For the broader publishing model, read SEO, GEO and AEO compared. For the relationship between a useful explanation and a reader’s decision, continue with trust and conversions in AI search. Neither article promises that a citation produces a visit or a business outcome.
