Keep four separate records: observed answers, referred visits, on-site behaviour, and qualified business outcomes.
Draw the journey in four layers
Our suggested framework separates an observed AI answer, a visit to your website, an on-site action, and a qualified business outcome. Each layer answers a different question. A source citation does not establish that someone clicked, and a form submission does not establish that an enquiry was suitable.
Write a definition for each stage before collecting numbers. For example, a “qualified enquiry” might require a target market, a relevant need, and consent to follow up. Your definition should match the business, not a generic reporting template.
Make trust a question you can investigate
Do not turn “trust” into a score without explaining the inputs. Instead, choose observable questions: do visitors open the evidence section, read the pricing explanation, or ask fewer questions about a previously unclear limitation?
Use a small number of customer interviews or support conversations to understand the behaviour. These observations provide context; they do not establish a causal effect on conversion. Keep the distinction visible in the report.
Define events around meaningful actions
Analytics events can represent actions on a website. Our recommendation is to document the trigger, parameters, deduplication rule, and business interpretation for each action before implementing it.
For an illustrative enquiry flow, separate “form opened,” “form successfully submitted,” and “enquiry qualified.” Count a successful submission only after the receiving system confirms it. Decide how internal traffic and repeat submissions will be handled, then test the definitions with a synthetic enquiry.
Leave room for an honest unknown
A person may see a brand in an answer and return later through a different channel. A referral report will not necessarily reconstruct that journey. Record the gap instead of assigning every unexplained visit to AI.
Compare consistent periods and annotate site changes, campaigns, and tracking changes. If outcomes improve after a content update, describe the association. Reserve a causal claim for a research design capable of supporting it.
Follow the evidence.
