Use one trustworthy page to answer a real question. Change the distribution and measurement plan for each search experience; keep the facts and evidence consistent.
Start with working definitions
In this journal, SEO means improving how a useful page can be discovered, crawled, understood and selected in search. AEO means making an answer easy for a reader to locate and evaluate. GEO means investigating how material is used or cited in generative answers. These are our working distinctions, not three standards enforced by every provider.
They describe different views of the same publishing problem. A clear explanation can help a visitor arriving from a conventional result and a visitor following a citation. Neither arrival tells you that the person understood the answer or completed their task.
Google says its existing SEO foundations apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode and that no special AI file or schema is required. That is a provider-specific statement, rather than proof that every answer engine works identically. Read Google’s AI guidance.
Choose the decision before choosing the label
| Question | Useful action | Evidence to keep |
|---|---|---|
| Can a search system retrieve the page? | Inspect its final HTTP response, robots rules and indexing directives. | A dated fetch or official inspection result for the exact URL. |
| Can a person find the answer quickly? | Write a direct opening, explain conditions and add a worked example. | A task-based review recording what readers could and could not determine. |
| Was the page cited in an AI answer? | Observe a defined question on a named surface and record the cited URL. | The question, date, interface and citation; mark missing observations as unknown. |
| Did discovery bring useful visits? | Review available referral and search data, then a meaningful action. | The source of each metric and what it does not cover. |
This matrix is an original planning aid. It is not a scoring model and has not been validated as a predictor of rankings. A row can reveal a missing check without assigning the site a percentage of “AI readiness.”
A worked example: one question, one page
Illustrative scenario: a small bilingual publisher wants to explain why an English page and its Chinese counterpart are not both appearing in search. Start with the decision the reader needs to make: is the issue discovery, a technical restriction, duplication, or an observation that is too early?
Draft one diagnostic guide with separate, complete language editions. Put the short answer first, then a sequence of checks, an example of evidence and a next action for each outcome. Link the English edition to English tools and the Chinese edition to Chinese tools. The translation should preserve limitations as carefully as it preserves instructions.
Use the Evidence-Based Content Brief Builder to record the audience, proposed explanation, sources and unresolved questions before drafting. The resulting brief is a working document. Supplying a source URL does not establish that the source supports every sentence.
Use tools to answer narrow questions
The Robots.txt Tester checks pasted rules against a URL and crawler token. It cannot inspect your firewall or confirm indexation. The Hreflang Builder & Map Checker generates reciprocal tags from your language map; it cannot establish that the remote pages contain equivalent content.
Once the page is useful and accessible, the Search Snippet Preview can help compare title and description drafts at different widths. It is a layout sketch, not a promise of Google’s final result. A more attractive preview cannot repair a noindex directive or a missing answer.
Record the input and outcome of the check you actually performed. “Tags generated” is a different result from “tags deployed,” and both differ from “the search engine processed them.” Keeping those states separate makes a small team’s report more useful.
Keep citations, visits and outcomes separate
For an initial observation log, choose a short, stable list of reader questions. Record the language, wording, date, product interface, answer and URL cited. A citation on one observation is evidence of that observation. Its absence is not evidence that the system has never seen your page.
Keep this log apart from organic clicks and referral visits. A citation can produce no recorded visit; a visit can arrive without a citation you observed. If tracking is unavailable, label that measurement unknown rather than entering zero.
OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot for search and GPTBot for potential training, with independent controls. Access policy should follow the owner’s decision about those uses. Allowing a crawler is not evidence that a page was retrieved or cited. Check the current crawler documentation.
A practical next publishing session
- Choose a reader question that needs a decision, rather than a new acronym.
- Record the evidence and unknowns in a brief, then write the complete answer.
- Check the actual URL, language counterpart and internal links.
- Publish the language pair when both editions are ready.
- Review observed discovery and reader outcomes before expanding the topic.
For the underlying concepts, continue with our GEO guide. For a concrete technical problem, use the page-indexing diagnostic checklist. The useful next step depends on what the evidence says is missing.
Follow the evidence.
